4 Ways to Ease a Toothache at Home

Man with a toothache at home

While you have a visit with your emergency dentist coming up about your toothache, you may wonder what you can do about it right now. You will get a permanent solution soon, but you deserve to find some temporary relief until then. Here are four home remedies that you can try out as you wait for your upcoming dental appointment.

1.)  Use a Cold Pack

An easy option to soothe the discomfort is with a cold pack. By pressing one against your cheek, the coolness can reduce blood flow to the area, slightly numbing it. Better yet, you can make it easily yourself by putting ice in a plastic baggie and wrapping that in a cloth. Do it for 15-minute intervals to avoid irritating your skin.

2.)  Rinse with Warm Salt Water

Salt can be a nice addition to your meals to strengthen the flavors, but it can also be helpful for your toothache. By rinsing your mouth with it, you can reduce inflammation and promote healing while also removing bacteria and debris. Put a teaspoon of this seasoning into a glass of warm water, and you’re all set.

3.)  Chew a Clove of Garlic

You may add extra garlic while you are cooking at home, but be sure to save some for your dental discomfort. This widely used culinary ingredient has medicinal properties you can benefit from. It can kill harmful bacteria that may be causing the problem. Simply chew on a clove and let it rest on your tooth, or mash it into a paste with a bit of salt and apply it to the affected tooth.

4.)  Put Real Vanilla Extract

If you bake every so often, then you can also use some spare vanilla extract you have. This product has alcohol, which can numb the pain you’re feeling and aid in healing. All you have to do is put some of it on a cotton swab or your finger and gently dab it on. Double-check the label to ensure it’s the real deal, as the imitation version may not be effective.

In the end, all the above can help you find relief for your toothache. However, remember that they are temporary solutions. Your dentist can give you a permanent fix that gives you back the comfortable, pain-free smile you deserve.
